After the huge success of Resident Evil 2, my expectations could not be higher for Resident Evil 3. After playing the demo for 30 minutes, any doubts I might have were dispelled. In fact, let me rectify this. After playing for 5 minutes, there was no more doubt. The spirit of remake present in Resident Evil 2 is still very much alive in the third title.
The gameplay remains as good as its predecessor, focusing on something more modern and that can easily reach a bigger market. It also seems to me a game more action-oriented than puzzles like in Resident Evil 2. However, it might be a little early to say that because the demo isn’t that long.
The famous enemy Nemesis is terrifying. In a matter of half a second, it can take your breath away and block your reasoning. Panic sets in, and it’s all hell breaks loose. The only time I could get away from him more easily was when I threw a grenade and our friend got a little disoriented. Other than that, I got run over, dragged and punched. This will certainly be a constant match in the game, for which I won’t be prepared for the first few hours, but nothing that practice won’t scare away. Only fear, because the tension will always be there.
But most of all, it was the visuals that surprised me. At a time when the current consoles are several years old, it’s amazing how Capcom can still improve something as good as it was in Resident Evil 2. RE Engine is superb and the bright colours of the game stand out in such a captivating way that I was left to stare for several moments at some of the commercial boards in the demo. Because of it, I even ended up taking a bunch of pictures, as I couldn’t help but share them on Twitter.
In conclusion, as you might expect, Resident Evil 3 promises to be one of the best games this year. For those who still had doubts (anyone had doubts?), the demo came to put everything on the table and say that the Resident Evil franchise will continue to give much to talk about in coming years. But does anyone have doubts that the next remake will be Resident Evil 4? I didn’t think so.
Resident Evil 3 Remake comes out on April 3, 2020 for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
