Control – The Foundation DLC – Review

Remedy’s game was the best in 2019 for me. Its narrative, visuals and gameplay resulted in a product of excellence, only tainted by some initial technical problems. That said, it was with great anticipation that I began to play first DLC The Foundation. This content takes up the narrative from where the main game left off and leads us to investigate Marshall’s disappearance, as well as problems with a structure called The Nail. When it comes to narrative, it turns out not to be something extraordinary, but it fits perfectly as a continuation of previous events.

The Foundation takes place in a new area of the game with the same name. It’s a place below the Oldest House and which takes us essentially through tunnels and caves. These are very dark but at the same time, also with brighter areas where I want to highlight a huge amount of red sand. Without a doubt, a great visual change compared to what was seen in the base game.

This content offers a new ability, which contains two variants. It’s called Shape and we can use it to create platforms or destroy obstacles. For both situations, these can only be applied in certain locations. You can only choose one of them initially, but as the game progresses, you will be able to get the other one. Whichever one you choose first, there will always be areas where you won’t be able to reach because they require one skill or the other. This means that once you get the second one, you can go back to access new paths and items that were off limits initially. These two powers eventually give a new dynamism to the way we move, and one of them can even be used in combat in specific locations.

Speaking of combat, the DLC brings a new enemy who is quite agile and has a kind of pickaxe or hammer in his hand and projects it against us. As if this weren’t already annoying enough, they themselves are still very agile, making them difficult targets to shoot down. This new enemy left me in panic in most of the confrontations, because his movement was always uncertain, and his melee weapon ended up making the fights even more intense.

In addition to the Shape ability, a new capability was also added to our shield. It’s called Shield Rush and now we can go against the enemies while we have the shield active. This can either eliminate them or push them back on impact. Without a doubt, another good mechanic to help in the combat, because I got the feeling that the confrontations got more difficult in this content. I even confess that frustration took hold of me at times, which I never felt in the base game. The battles with some bosses are very interesting, but the checkpoints problem is still present. Apart from backing up a lot and forcing us to a long shift in some cases, the long loadings ended up making me even more frustrated. It should be noted that I’m playing on a base Playstation 4, which shouldn’t help in this matter. As far as performance is concerned, the game still has frame rate problems sporadically, but much better than a few months ago.

The Foundation is a DLC that can be completed between four and five hours. However, if you want to do all the missions or get all the collectibles, it may last a little longer. The new area offers a considerably different environment to what we were used to and although the narrative is not surprising, it complements the story of Control. If you liked the base game, then there’s no way you won’t enjoy this DLC.
